Double Sided Fireboxes

A double sided firebox puts one flame between two spaces: an ethanol firebox built into a divider, watched from the seating on both sides.

What a double sided firebox does: double sided fireboxes

A double sided firebox is a chamber with two glazed faces, built into a divider so that one bioethanol flame serves the rooms on both sides. It is the firebox form for open plans: the divider keeps the spaces distinct — a living area from a dining area, a lounge from a bar — while the flame passes between them and ties them together. Neither room gets a lesser fire; both watch the same flame.

The construction carries the divider as much as the fire. The box is made to order to the divider's width and thickness, across the family's published width range, and the burner sits inside it with its fuel handling arranged for the side the operator uses. Which side that is belongs in the inquiry, because it fixes the access details of the build.

Divider planning for two-sided fire

Planning starts with the divider itself: its position, its thickness, and what stands on each side of it. Seating on both sides is the usual arrangement, and the flame height reads against seated eye level from both directions. A divider that also carries storage, shelving or a screen changes the box's neighbours, and those neighbours should be described in the brief in plain words.

Width follows the divider's run. A box that spans the full divider reads as architecture; a shorter box centred in a longer divider reads as a feature within it. Both are regular orders. The choice is aesthetic, but it must be made before the brief is written, because width is the box's defining dimension and cannot be averaged in the inquiry.

Double sided beside tunnel and corner forms

The tunnel form is the double sided box's close relative: a tunnel firebox is also watched from two sides, but through the construction, from room to room, rather than across a divider within one open space. The corner form turns the flame around a wall's edge instead. Buyers sometimes hold all three open for one project; the detail pages keep them separate because the constructions differ even where the viewing sounds similar.

Where two forms serve one project — a double sided divider in the main space, a corner box in a secondary room — the inquiry should carry them as separate lines with their widths beside them. A note that says two fireboxes leaves the forms to be guessed; a list that names each form and width leaves nothing to guess.

Confirming a double sided order

Double sided firebox confirmation points
PointWhat to confirm
Divider dimensionsWidth and thickness of the divider construction
Box widthFull-run or centred feature, in millimetres
Operator sideThe side the burner is fuelled and run from
ControlIntelligent or manual

The operator side is the line buyers most often forget, and it is the one that cannot be changed after the build. State it with the divider dimensions, and the confirmation covers the access arrangement once, in writing, before production.

One further divider question is worth a line in the brief: what the divider does besides hold the fire. A divider that is also the room's storage wall, its media wall or its shelving gives the firebox neighbours with their own depths and doors, and the box is built among them. Describe the divider's other work in a sentence, and the confirmation treats the construction as the piece of furniture it actually is, not as a blank slab with a fire in it.
